Anger is a feeling nearly all people struggle with. People live in fear of expressing it or may find it the only safe feeling available to them. Claudia Black begins this video with an explanation of the various types and forms of anger. She moves through the many faces of anger including: passive-aggressive behavior, sarcasm/caustic remarks, verbal abuse, blaming, guerrilla humor, anger with authority, retaliatory anger, blind rage, anger as an excuse, isolation, depression and the use of medicators.
In time, anger becomes self-hate, a buffer/mask against feelings, a defense against shame. The client momentarily feels righteously indignant, morally superior and a sense of power. For some, it's a way to get high with anger excitement. Others walk through life letting anger solve their problems -- they do not know where the anger begins -- it's just there.
As with other addictions, anger can be a buildup of tolerance, loss of control, negative consequences and an inability to stop. Like the alcoholic, the anger junkie displays a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Calm and controlled one minute and out of control one second later. Anger has immediate and long-term consequences -- loss of jobs, financial repercussions, broken relationships, personality deprivation, and, for some, jail and prison.
